SINGLE LIGHT

a back stairway beyond stars and night clouds   cracked stone steps rise to a stained faded door half screen the other part wood singing with rust when opening and failing to close when shut   gazing up the ascending stairs there’s a light at the end of a twisted cord swinging like a dead … More SINGLE LIGHT

A TOUCH OF MEMORY

tall pines line the side of the road to the shoreline where rocks lay scattered, black and gray, smooth from millennial washing   it’s a place held tight to the chest, spoken of only in memory when skies are alive with color and few words are spoken   but night remembers

IT IS THE END

night, a silent voice   eyes fold satin smooth   chances and memories walk across thoughts to the other side   destiny and legacy hold the cards   as impatience opens another door into a large room of what was lost with a small box of what was found

LEANING

darkness covers the linen of skin, folding over with day lost, the sky closes out   the feel of sun warm breezes surrender to shadows replacing colors with a flat gray like layers of curtains,   the first call of night leaning into stillness

A BREATH RELEASED

the energy of day resigns itself to evening   thin shadows cast linen gray images onto sides of cottages and front porches   the soil and trees release a tired breath as night occupies all spaces   darkness closes day lilies, a reminder that time runs with us until it fails

RED SKY

clouds turn like pages   stories release from the swelling haze   the sun strongly appears shining on road signs of the heart   a late burning dusky sky suggests tomorrows forecast as day rolls over into night and dawn releases an overflow of rain from heaven;   the soil drinks the sky dry

SOUL PRINT

youth took the half of me photos that never grow old   sandy foot prints left behind strangers under full moons   dusk and lost clouds dawn with a new start   a dream dismantled a prayer answered   recovering from loss falling into strength   the ordinary path the measure of  a chance … More SOUL PRINT

LATER THERE IS NIGHT

subtracting the parts of day, the unfinished, early shadows, voices within, unanswered dreams, questions and morning coffee   it’s a swim against the elephant no one talks about, hearts holding grief and half promises while speaking to the waiting arms   of a soul who knows darkness comes first, and then the safety of night … More LATER THERE IS NIGHT

DESERT SHORT CUT

falling knives and unmarked graves suspicious eyes serpents and fire cold scales, warm venom on the desert floor as day heat fails to night cold and folds of winds usher in cool flat air like ankle deep water and the pull of tides you run for life with busy feet crossing to safety on the … More DESERT SHORT CUT
