BLACKBIRDS

on a dirt road of my father, and his father, with winds in my pocket and shiftless turns   the unknown before and after walking under elephant boughs past ancient bark and lilacs between angles of sun and shade stepping over boundaries past stonewalls in disrepair   black birds break silence sheltering in treetops, watching, … More BLACKBIRDS

RED SKY

clouds turn like pages   stories release from the swelling haze   the sun strongly appears shining on road signs of the heart   a late burning dusky sky suggests tomorrows forecast as day rolls over into night and dawn releases an overflow of rain from heaven;   the soil drinks the sky dry

YOUR OWN ECHO

when alone the only voice returning is an echo, the strangeness of a familiar chord to argue with, show sympathy to or scold   each pause, no matter how uncomfortable, promotes an opening for rebuttal, the opportunity to gain favor between reality and shadows

FALLING CHAINS

resurrecting self, folktales, adventures, surviving a space invaded with good works and deeds overlooked,   the misdirection of obvious road signs while inspecting the caged animal within   as chains loosen, constant pressure, the escape is inevitable, beyond the guardian, to be accepted or misunderstood

BROKEN UNDER RAIN

its where being broken coaxes the spirit to dance to psalms spoken soft while gazing up urging a cloud to spell your name, or form a puffed dog, instead it rains, light drops harmless dribbles, one shape beyond mist with a flat soaking on coats and hats, dripping off to the ground, soaking in, watering … More BROKEN UNDER RAIN

SOUL PRINT

youth took the half of me photos that never grow old   sandy foot prints left behind strangers under full moons   dusk and lost clouds dawn with a new start   a dream dismantled a prayer answered   recovering from loss falling into strength   the ordinary path the measure of  a chance … More SOUL PRINT

LATER THERE IS NIGHT

subtracting the parts of day, the unfinished, early shadows, voices within, unanswered dreams, questions and morning coffee   it’s a swim against the elephant no one talks about, hearts holding grief and half promises while speaking to the waiting arms   of a soul who knows darkness comes first, and then the safety of night … More LATER THERE IS NIGHT

SEPARATING POWER

to the river   currents of madness, a serpent tempting   wisdom before time the greatest of powers always running beyond and away   a deep voice of fear and warning   the under-surface twists and turns its own song as it keeps the sides forever apart

EAST STREET

unashamed smoky alleys, rock walls overlook back porch squatters   pigeons wary of a changing breeze and strangers without wings garble a frightened message taking flight   barred windows, forgotten garbage, and bells ringing, signal the top of the hour;   for some the end, others, late for dinner

OVERLOOKED TRAVELER

a life in parenthesis   brittle remembrances of unlimited space, beyond the moon   considering which dreams to hold which mountains to avoid and roads to release   there were winds in full flight, an opus with voices, thin like the pages of a book dripping letters, forming words   a balance between a breath … More OVERLOOKED TRAVELER
